How to optimise website speed: a checklist for 2026

Speed Optimization Checklist

In luxury digital experiences, performance is not merely a technical checkbox — it is an essential facet of brand perception. When high-net-worth users or prospective clients land on your site, every millisecond of delay erodes trust and luxury value.

1. Optimizing WebGL & Canvas Shaders

Interactive 3D shaders, raymarched signed distance fields (SDFs), and refractive distortion add incredible visual polish to hero sections. However, unoptimized fragment shaders frequently cause dropped frames, laptop fan spin, and stuttering scroll behavior.

The Raymarching Bottleneck

Without spatial bounding tests, every background pixel executes full raymarching steps across empty 3D space. Implementing ray-sphere bounding discards allows over 80% of pixels to exit immediately with zero calculations.

Key WebGL Best Practices:

  • Early Bounding Discards: Test whether the camera ray intersects the object's bounding volume at the geometry plane. If it misses, immediately sample background texture and return.
  • Intelligent DPR Clamping: Never render heavy fragment raymarching at native 3x or 4x device pixel ratios. Clamp DPR to 1.0 on mobile and 1.25 on desktop.
  • Pause Off-Screen Execution: Employ IntersectionObserver and content-visibility: auto to stop requestAnimationFrame rendering loops completely when the canvas is scrolled out of view.

2. Modern Asset Compression: WebP & AVIF

High-resolution lookbooks and editorial imagery should always be served in modern next-generation formats. Converting uncompressed PNGs or bloated JPEGs to modern WebP cuts image payload by 65–85% with zero perceptible loss in visual fidelity.

3. CSS Performance & Hardware Acceleration

Always animate composite properties — transform and opacity. Avoid animating layout properties like top, left, width, or height that trigger continuous browser reflows.

4. Font Optimization & Layout Shifts

Prevent Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) by utilizing font-display: swap combined with matching fallback font metrics to prevent text jumping during font file download.
